Bolts are threaded rods or pins that fasten objects together. They usually have a head at one end and a thread at the other.
Bolts are secured by threaded nuts of the same configuration. For example, a metric bolt would require a metric nut to secure it. Similarly, an English bolt would require an English nut.
Bolts serve many purposes in construction and fabrication, and there are many specially designed bolts used for specific types of manufacturing.

Bolt Designs
- Bolts come in many designs. A carriage bolt is used mostly in wood construction and comes with a domed head.
- A lag bolt is also used for fastening in wood, and often comes with a hex-shaped head.
- An anchor bolt comes in many configurations, such as ribbed, conical, or sleeved, and is typically used for fastening in concrete or plasterboard
- A U bolt is shaped like the letter U, with a thread and nut fastened at each end
- A T bolt has a T-shaped head and are often used to secure scaffolding, while a J bolt has a slender head curved at a right angle to the thread.
- J bolts are often used to secure hinges to doors or fence posts.
- A shoulder bolt is designed to act like a pin or an axle and consists of a cantilevered end that stands out from the surface of the material to which it is bolted.
Materials
- Bolts also come in many different materials. A stainless steel bolt is used in applications that require strength and resistance to corrosion.
- A titanium bolt is also chosen for its strength and resilience, and is often found in precision engine manufacture.
- There are many different certifications and approvals for bolts and other fasteners.
