Hex Head Cap Screws

Hex Cap Screws are bolts 1/4" diameter and larger with a hex head and a washer face on the underside of the head.

Hexagonal (hex) socket head has a hexagonal hole and is driven by a Hex Wrench, sometimes called an Allen key or Hex key, or by a power tool with a hexagonal bit. Tamper-resistant versions with a pin in the recess are available. Hex sockets are increasingly used for modern bicycle parts because hex wrenches are very light and easily carried tools. They are also frequently used for self-assembled furniture.

The most common material types and strength that are used for hex head bolts are stainless steel, carbon steel, or alloy steel as noted below.

  • Stainless steel bolts are an attractive choice because they don't need any special coating to avoid corrosion.
  • Carbon steel bolts are, however, the most common type that you will find in the average hardware store and are zinc plated in order to resist corrosion.
  • The strength of carbon steel hex bolts typically hovers around 55 ksi (kips, or 1,000 pounds per square inch).
  • Alloy steel hex bolts are a type of high strength carbon steel bolt that can be made to withstand up to 300 ksi. Such bolts are not inherently corrosion resistant, and therefore must be coated to protect them. Cadmium or zinc is common types of plating for such alloy bolts
